Awareness & Education

Animal Concerns

Do you love animals? Do you feel that your love of animals brings you closer to God and to all of creation? St. Francis stated that “Not to hurt our humble animals is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission -- to be of service to them whenever they require it.” St. Matthias has formed a ministry specifically to address the needs and concerns of animals both within and outside our local community. If you feel you would like to help make a difference in the lives of animals, please join us.

Diversity Council

Recognizing that our parish community includes the richness of many ethnic cultures, the St. Matthias Diversity Council has been formed to provide practical and theologically sound models and skills that are necessary to move a faith community toward greater inclusion. The purpose of the committee is to resolve any issues through its main mission of education, social awareness, activities and spirituality to help out parish truly live out our 2006-2007 theme, “You belong to us, for you belong to Christ.”

Ministry with People with Disabilities

This ministry exists to affirm the rights of persons with disabilities, and to welcome them into all aspects of the life of our parish.  The members work within the parish community to provide awareness and education to overcome both attitudinal and architectural barriers.  Our goal is to create an inclusive parish community whereby the people of our parish will come to recognize the gifts that people with disabilities bring to the church.  The ministry meets monthly to discuss how our parish can best serve the needs of persons with disabilities.”

Parish Nursing Ministry

The Parish Nursing Ministry is dedicated to caring for the greatest gift from the Father, life and health. The goal is to bring faith in God’s love, comfort and healing, to serve the community promoting wholeness and physical, emotional and spiritual health. We serve in the role of health educators, health counselors and health facilitators. All parish health care personnel are invited to join.

Pro-Life Ministry

The members of the Pro-Life Ministry are dedicated to the defense and protection of all human life from conception through natural death. Taking our inspiration from the encyclical of Pope John Paul II, The Gospel of Life, we are committed to working spiritually, educationally, and legislatively to promote the sanctity of life. Activities are carried out in close cooperation with diocesan directives. Our efforts were recognized with the Pro-Vita Award presented by Bishop Vincent de Paul Breen in January 2001.
