First Eucharist/First Reconciliation

The First Eucharist/First Reconciliation curriculum includes 8 catechetical/formation sessions – four for First Penance and four for First Eucharist. These sessions are scheduled on Sunday mornings throughout the year beginning in October. There is also a First Eucharist Retreat Day on a Saturday in the spring. Attendance for all sessions is required and each child must be accompanied by at least one parent. These sessions are in addition to participation in G.I.F.T.– Growing In Faith Together [our K-8 religious formation program]; OR in addition to attending St. Matthias School.

Children will celebrate First Reconciliation on a Saturday morning in January or early February. First Communions are celebrated at specific Sunday morning masses over a period of approximately 2-3 weeks within the Easter season. The families choose the dates and the Mass most convenient for them. All of the First Communicants and their families, as a group, celebrate Eucharist on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ usually at the noon Mass.

All families that desire their children to receive First Reconciliation [A Diocesan requirement prior to reception of First Eucharist] and First Eucharist must complete the online registration form. *If you have more than one child you need to register, please complete a separate registration for each one. The fee for First Reconciliation/First Eucharist sacramental preparation is $70 per child. Please make checks payable to "St. Matthias" and return it to the Parish Office -- St. Matthias, Attn. Dee Nann, 168 JFK Boulevard, Somerset, NJ 08873.

Please remember that this process is IN ADDITION TO participation in either our family GIFT program of religious formation or the child’s attendance at St. Matthias School. Please submit the GIFT fee in a separate check from the First Reconciliation/First Eucharist fee.
